Innovative Leadership Development

The job of Executive Director of a Human Milk Bank requires a unique skill set.  This leader must have the scientific background in human lactation, Neonatal Intensive Care, milk banking, and an understanding of the process of pasteurization; possess the business management skills to run a production line that depends on procurement of raw material to process; possess personnel leadership capabilities, facility management, and organizational skills; familiar with the corporate structure and IRS regulations pertaining to non-profit organizations, including regulations for fund-raising and grant-writing, and be able to work within that framework in all areas; and this leader must be familiar with the concept of compliance as it pertains to industry standards, protected health information, and financial reporting to both the Internal Revenue Service and any foundation grantors.  Many potential applicants for this job will have some skills, but not all in this list.

This project seeks to fill those knowledge gaps while in collaboration with other Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) directors for the development of Executive Director training with the intent that this training will be shared with all members of HMBABA in the United States and Canada. This project will produce a blueprint for more standardized development of the next generation of milk bank leaders in Mississippi and in North America.

Outreach Coordinator

We’re supporting Mothers’ Milk Bank to hire an Outreach Coordinator to reach more human milk donors and more financial donors. In addition, resources for fundraising supplies would enable Mothers’ Milk Bank of MS to increase outreach activities statewide. With this new position, the Milk Bank plans to rework its current model and encourage community involvement through grant writing, fundraising, outreach, social media communication, mother-baby education and various other task-specific duties.
