Singing River Healthcare Academy – Healthcare Apprenticeships
Providing on-the-job training and free classroom instruction to healthcare apprentices.
Singing River Health System (SRHS) comprises three hospitals—Pascagoula Hospital, Ocean Springs Hospital, and Gulfport Hospital—and primary care medical clinics, community medical parks, and specialty centers throughout the area. SRHS provides critical health services, numerous community outreach programs, and charitable and educational programs. SRHS strengthens the local economy by recruiting over 300 of our community’s best physicians and other professionals while providing good jobs,
wages, and benefits to more than 3,000 employees and their families as Jackson County’s second-largest employer. Through this dedication, SRHS helps improve the community’s health while making it a better place to live and work, with an annual economic impact exceeding $270 million. SRHS is one of the largest emergency departments in the state, caring for more than 100,000 patients per year.
SRHS, a community-owned, non-profit organization, has launched the Singing River Healthcare Academy, a new workforce development initiative. The academy provides apprenticeship pathways into healthcare positions such as Licensed Practical Nurse (with MGCCC), certified nursing assistant, Medical Assistant, and Phlebotomy Technician. The Singing River Healthcare Academy provides students with on-the-job training and classroom instruction at no cost to the student. Students in the program will split their time between the classroom, practical applications, and working within SRHS. Once the required clinical hours have been obtained, apprentices can sit for their necessary license/certification exams. The Singing River Healthcare Academy is an important Mississippi Gulf Coast addition. It will result in more healthcare professionals in our state, higher wages for Mississippians, and a better quality of life. This grant supports apprentice salaries, supplies, learning technology, and course materials for the LPN and Medical Assistant Programs and provides simulation equipment for both programs.
